I earned my B.A. in Chemistry from Smith College and my Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After teaching for a number of years at Middlebury College, I recently joined the faculty at Smith College as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. I returned to my alma mater to further my mission to empower and educate women and other underrepresented individuals through science. I love chemistry because it allows us to understand an invisible world, which is so important for understanding the world we can see. My lab studies microbial natural product biosynthesis. We bioprospect extreme environments (e.g., acid rock drainage) for new bioactive compounds and characterize enzymes involved in siderophore biosynthesis.
